In general, when you use PROC MIGRATE to migrate a 32-bit library to a 64-bit library, the SAS file size can increase slightly. The increase can occur for the following reasons:

• The size of the descriptor information can increase in a data file, view, or catalog. This increase is extremely small.

• The size of a compressed data file can increase. This increase is expected to be 12 bytes multiplied by the number of observations (rows). For information about compressing data files, see SAS Language Reference: Concepts.

• Some catalog entries can increase in size. This increase is difficult to predict.

• An index file can increase significantly in size.

• If you have tuned a 32-bit data set so that the page size exactly fits, you will need to re-tune for a 64-bit data set. This increase is difficult to predict.

• Beginning with SAS 9.4, the optimal buffer size is increased to improve I/O performance. The increase in buffer size might increase the size of the data set or utility file. If the current optimization processes are not ideal for your SAS session, use DATAPAGESIZE=COMPAT93 for the optimization processes that were used prior to SAS 9.4.
