Usage Note 24290: What computer resources need to be monitored to ensure that the SAS Metadata Server is functioning properly?
Memory usage, paging, and CPU cycles. The SAS Metadata Server uses an in-memory database. Paging (excessive swapping) would mean that you do not have enough physical RAM on the server. Once the server starts paging, you see metadata server performance degrade as more and more clients read and write metadata.
On the Windows platform, we recommend that you use the Windows Performance Monitor to see if there is any paging on the computer. If you are unfamiliar with the Windows Performance Monitor (PerfMon), see the Windows documentation.
On the UNIX platform, we recommend that you use sar.
For z/OS, there are several offerings to choose from; they include the following products:
- Omegamon from IBM Tivoli
- MAINVIEW from BMC software
- System Display and Search Facility (SDSF) from IBM
