Usage Note 24207: Can I use PROC CPORT to transport a SAS 9 data file to a SAS 6, 7, or 8 session?
No. When you try to CIMPORT the transport file into an older release of SAS, you will receive errors. Here are the two most common errors:
ERROR: TRANSPORT FILE IS BAD
ERROR: The value is not a valid SAS name
If you want to use a SAS 9 data file in SAS 6, 7, or 8, do not use PROC CPORT to create a transport file. While the CPORT transport file enables SAS users to share SAS data files between platforms, it was designed to support the newest features of SAS and is intended for moving them from an earlier version to a later version (for example, from Version 6 to Version 8) or between the same versions (for example, from one SAS 9 host to another SAS 9 host).
Although the above errors can have other causes, this is an easy one to verify:
check the SAS release you are running and the release under which the transport file was created. PROC CPORT creates a transportable file across operating systems as long as you are moving to the same release of SAS or a later release.
For more information, see the topic in the Migration Community about using a SAS 9 data file in a previous version of SAS.
