Take the following steps to make icons from other sources available on the SAS desktop. This procedure assumes you have GIF files, but the same principles apply to other formats.

1. If necessary, crop the images. The SAS image editor can be used for this purpose.
   • Give the IMAGE command.
   • File --> Open --> Image file... --> select the GIF file.
   • Edit --> Select to select the portion of the image you want to use.
   • Edit --> Crop to get rid of everything but the selected portion.
   • File --> Save as --> Image file... --> specify a name for the cropped GIF file.

2. The SAS desktop uses 24x24 and 32x32 bit images. To create versions of your GIF files in these sizes, use a package like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop. This is also the stage for touching up your images, in case they don't automatically look great in their new resolutions.

3. Convert your GIF files into IMAGE entries in a SAS catalog using

   Globals --> Manage --> Import Image

   Use this window's help for step-by-step instructions. Put your 32x32 images in one catalog and your 24x24 images in another.

4. For use by the desktop, images need to be in the sashelp.i0808 catalog(32x32), the sashelp.i0606 catalog (24x24), and the sashelp.i0404 catalog (which contains 16x16 images but we're going to put 24x24 images into it -- this catalog is used only in a peripheral way).
