When using the double-byte character set (DBCS) version of SAS^® and PROC CIMPORT to import a transport file containing a data set with composite indexes, you may find garbage characters in the index names of the converted data.

Additionally, the following warning may occur:

In the case of a data set and simple index, PROC CIMPORT may also generate the following:

   ERROR: The index name ___  must be the same as
          the variable name ____  for a simple index.

   WARNING: Skipping data set due to error.

   NOTE: The SAS System stopped processing this step because of errors.

The following is an example of a condition that produces these messages.

Shift-jis and euc-jp are both Japanese encodings. If the transport file was created in a SAS session with the encoding value of shift-jis and you are importing the file into a SAS session with the encoding value of euc-jp, and the data set contains indexes, you may receive an error and/or garbage characters in the converted data. The same occurs for Chinese encoding values euc-cn and ibm-935.
