Usage Note 20588: TCP/IP bind call might fail when starting a SAS IOM Server
When a SAS IOM server such as the SAS® Metadata Server, Object Spawner, or
SAS®OLAP Server is started, elssrv launches sasauth and sets up a listen
port that it uses to connect back to the server being launched. The
listen port that is selected should come from the range of ephemeral
ports as configured by ndd. However, the elssrv code starts at port
30000 and increments one port at a time until it finds a port that is
available instead of using a port within the defined range of ephemeral
ports. This creates the possibility that connections on these listen
ports will prevent servers from binding to their defined ports.
For example, if the SAS Metadata Server is defined to use port 30000,
then elssrv will launch sasauth and set the listen port to 30001 when
the SAS Metadata Server is started. If the object spawner has the
operator port defined to be 30001, then it will fail to start and the
following error will be given in the object spawner log:
ERROR: The TCP/IP bind call for the operator listen port failed.
The returned error number is 125, and the text associated with
that error is (The specified address is already in use.).
As a workaround, specify ports for the SAS servers below 29999. Or
specify them high enough so that that they do not conflict with the
ephemeral ports used between sasauth and the launched server.
