Usage Note 20517: What are the SAS_UTIL folders in the PC SAS WORK library?
The SAS WORK library contains temporary files and folders created during a SAS session.
Some SAS procedures, such as PROC REPORT and PROC GLM, are multi-threaded procedures in SAS 9, and these procedures take advantage of the SMP hardware. Temporary SAS_UTIL folders are created and used by the multi-threaded procedures. The exact name of the SAS_UTIL folder is determined by the following:
SAS_util<serial><pid>_<node>
<serial> is a unique 4- to 6-digit hexadecimal serial number that distinguishes each directory from the other directories that are created by the same process.
<pid> is the process ID number, which is represented as an 8 digit hexadecimal number.
<node> is the name of the host on which the process is running.
To determine your current SAS work library location submit one of these lines of SAS code:
libname work list;
proc options option=work; run;
For example, on Microsoft Windows operating systems, this file might exist in this SAS Work library:
C:\Users\MY_USERID\AppData\Local\Temp\SAS Temporary Files\_TD13659_C99999_\
SAS_util00012222GOW_HO008888539\ut0F0C0222222.utl
NOTE: AppData might be in a hidden folder. To view hidden folders, in File Explorer, select the VIEW tab across the top. Then, near the top, on the right, check the box for HIDDEN ITEMS.
