Problem Note 20323: SASĀ® 9.1.3 and earlier SMTP e-mails do not timeout when block waiting for a response from a SMTP server
In SAS 9.1.3 and earlier, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) e-mails
send commands to the SMTP server and wait for a response. In situations
where the SMTP server cannot process an e-mail, the server should
timeout the connection, release the e-mail job, and produce an error
message.
However, at some sites the SMTP server does not timeout. In this
circumstance, the e-mail job will become unresponsive which requires you
to terminate the job manually.
The hot fix adds a timer gate for 10,000ms (10 seconds). If you do not receive a response from the SMTP server, after 10 seconds the gate will be posted and send the following message:
Email service not available
If a SMTP email job goes into a wait state and becomes unresponsive, you must terminate the job manually.
