SAS 9 software reads all generations of a generation data group (GDG) if you define an alias data set to a GDG that is managed by the Storage Management Subsystem (SMS) and, subsequently, you allocate that alias with a FILENAME statement for input. If the GDG is not managed by the SMS, or if you allocate the alias with a DD statement in your Job Control Language (JCL) program, then SAS will read only the GDG level that is defined to the alias.
In SAS® 8.2 software, the FILENAME statement only reads the GDG level that is defined.
To avoid this problem in SAS 9, allocate the alias with a JCL DD statement.
