Usage Note 18536: Error: "The SAS/SECURE® client for Windows must be installed to use strong encryption algorithms"

DetailsAboutRate It

SAS/SECURE® Windows Client must be installed on machines that are running COM-based client applications of SAS® that use strong encryption. You can tell that this client must be installed when you see the following error message in the client application:

Error: The SAS/SECURE Client for Windows must be installed to use strong encryption algorithms.

Running the secwin.exe executable installs the files that are necessary for the IOM Bridge for the COM-based client to use the CryptoAPI algorithms.

The SAS® Integration Technologies Client for Windows (inttech.exe) must be installed in order to use this package. To perform this installation, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the SAS Client-Side Components Volume 2 CD (located in the 804 Client Media section in your SAS Installation Kit).
  2. On the left side, click SAS Integration Technologies Client for Windows 9.1.3.
  3. On the right side, scroll down to SAS Integration Technologies Client for Windows 9.1.3 and click Install.

Go can also go to your SAS Software Depot and run inttech.exe from the \client2cd\itclient directory.

To install the SAS/SECURE Client for Windows, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the SAS Secure CD (located in the 800 SAS Foundation Media section in your SAS Installation Kit).
  2. On the left side, click SAS/SECURE Windows Client Components.
  3. On the right side, scroll down to SAS/SECURE Windows Client Components 9.1.3 and click Install.

You can also go to your SAS Software Depot and run secwin.exe from the disk301\secure1cd\securewinclt directory.

When you run the executable, the following files are installed and used by the IOM Bridge for COM and SAS spawners:

tcpdcapi.dll
tcpdeam.dll
tcpdencr.dll

If you have a PC that needs encrypted communications through the network to your SAS server, then you should run secwin.exe on the PC to install the preceding three files. You should also run secwin.exe on your Windows servers.
