Usage Note 18941: The SAS/CONNECT® spawner under Windows stops responding when there are a large number of concurrent connections
Users might see the following ERROR when trying to establish a SAS/CONNECT® session with a spawner running as a service:
ERROR: A communication subsystem partner link setup request failure has occurred.
ERROR: recv call failed, lost connection with client.
The error occurs because the SAS/CONNECT spawner is running out of heap space.
When the spawner runs as a service, it creates an invisible (noninteractive) desktop for the SAS/CONNECT remote sessions to use so that the icons are not displayed on the interactive desktop.
The size of the interactive and noninteractive desktop heap is set separately under Microsoft Windows. The default for an interactive desktop heap is 3,072 KB, whereas it is only 512 KB for a noninteractive desktop heap.
To change the size for noninteractive desktop heap, complete these steps:
Note: Always back up your registry before you make any registry changes. For assistance, see Windows Help, Microsoft documentation, or the Microsoft Windows website. SAS is not responsible when you edit the Windows registry. Changes in the Windows registry can render your system unusable and will require that you reinstall the operating system.
- Launch the Registry Editor (regedit) and open the following registry value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\SubSystems\Windows
The value is a long string in which SharedSection=1024,3072,512 appears. These values might differ, depending on your version of Windows.
- The first value (1024) specifies the size of a shared heap for all desktops.
- The second value (3072) specifies the size of interactive desktop heap.
- The third value (512) specifies the size of noninteractive desktop heap, in KB.
- Increase the third value from 512 to 3,072 to allow the SAS® spawner to spawn a larger number of SAS sessions.
- Reboot the system to make the changes take effect.
