Problem Note 16937: Columns with numeric names are mishandled when surfacing
locally-residing Excel data with Unix SAS/ACCESS Interface to PC Files
in SAS 9
When surfacing data from locally-residing Excel spreadsheets with PROC
IMPORT and SAS/ACCESS Interface to PC Files on Unix in SAS 9.1.3 (SP3),
columns with numeric names are mishandled. If your spreadsheet has
column names with embedded blanks or forward slashes, these columns are
handled as they should be. The offending characters are replaced by
underscores in the resulting SAS variable name. For example:
Excel Column name SAS Name
Face Amount Face_Ammount
Long/Short Long_Short
However, columns with numeric names are not read in at all. For example,
columns with names like -25, 2.5, 10 are completely ignored and not read
in. With SAS/ACCESS Interface to PC Files in SAS 9 on Windows, they're
renamed as F1, F2, F3, and so on (as expected) and the data is read in.
