Problem Note 16813: SASĀ® Enterprise Miner(TM) JWS client fails to open with ArrayOutOfBounds or DO_NOTHING_ON_CLOSE messages
Launching SAS Enterprise Miner via Java Web Start can fail with one of the
following messages:
java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: -1
Unable to launch the Application
defaultCloseOperation must be one of: DO_NOTHING_ON_CLOSE, HIDE_ON_CLOSE, or DISPOSE_ON_CLOSE
SAS Enterprise Miner 5.2 and 5.3 require Java 1.4.2, version 1.4.2_09 or higher, to execute client and mid-tier functions. For SAS Enterprise Miner client deployment locally, the SAS private JRE is installed and used by the installed configuration. For Java Web Start client deployment, the client must use the Java Web Start-enabled versions of Java.
J2SE™ Runtime Environment 5.0 and Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 (also known as JRE 1.5 and JRE 1.6, respectively) will cause the SAS Enterprise Miner 5.2 client to fail to open, as indicated by the above messages.
To force Java Web Start to use 1.4.2 for Java Web Start applications, use the following steps:
- Install the Java 1.4.2 JRE or JDK from Sun if it is not already on the machine. The JREs installed are typically under
C:\Program Files\Java
for Windows machines. Go to Sun Microsystem's web site at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html to download Java 1.4.2.
- Open the Java Web Start Java Application Cache Viewer (for JRE 5) or the Java Control Panel (for JRE 6). The method you use to do this depends on the JRE version you have installed and other specifics to your environment. Most users will find the item "Java" in their Windows Control Panel.
- If you have opened the Java Application Cache Viewer, click Edit=>Preferences and select the Java tab. If you have opened the Java Control Panel, select the Java tab.
- Click the "View" button under the "Java Application Runtime Settings" section.
- If there is not a line for Product "1.4.2_xx", click the "Find" button and point to the JRE or JDK bin folder and select javaw.exe. Return to the Java Application Runtime Settings.
- Select the check box under the "Enabled" column for the 1.4.2 product, and deselect the check boxes for any other Java versions.
- Click OK to save the settings and exit the cache viewer or control panel.
- If the SAS Enterprise Miner client was running, exit it and relaunch the application.
