Usage Note 14847: Guidelines for installing and configuring SAS/ACCESS® Interface to PC Files in the UNIX environment
Below are some guidelines and documentation on installing and
configuring SAS/ACCESS Interface to PC Files SOftware on Unix.
1) The Configuration Guide for SAS 9.x Foundation for Unix
Environments contains the following information:
SAS/ACCESS Interface to PC Files requires that PC File Server be
installed on a Windows client. PC File Server is available from
the SAS Client-side Components media, found in the Third-Party
Media (Media Storage division) of your Installation Kit. The media
contains installation instructions for the PC File Server client,
as well as links to configuration information.
2) The SAS 9.x Foundation System Requirements contains the following
information:
However, to access Microsoft Access database file(.mdb), Microsoft
Excel workbook file(.xls) or any ODBC supported data sources,
SAS/ACCESS Interface to PC Files software requires the PC Files
Server (pcfserver.exe) running on Windows. The PC Files Server
(pcfserver.exe) component is shipped on the Client Side Components
CDs.
3) The PC File Server Client Software is located on the SAS
Client-Side Components Volume 1. On that disk there are
installation instructions. To view these instruction, perform the
following steps:
- Insert CD: SAS Client-Side Components Volume 1 (Multiple) on
Windows
- You will see the above Windows displayed. Choose English and
click OK button to launch SAS Software Navigator
- Click 'PC File Server' on the left pane of the displayed
window.
- Click 'Installation Instruction' on the right pane and read
the Installation Instructions. The Installation Instructions
will be displayed.

Installing the PC File Server 9.1
When you click on the install link in the SAS Software
Navigator, an Install Wizard will guide you through the
installation process. The installation process is designed to
be very simple. On most screens, all you will need to do is
select the Next button to advance to the next screen.
Unless otherwise specified, the PC File Server will be
installed in C:Program FilesSASPC File Server.
Installable Components
- pcfserver.exe - The SAS PC File Server executable
- Several support files
Using the PC File Server
You can start the PC File Server by going to Start -> Programs ->
SAS -> PC File Server 9.1. This will launch the SAS PC File
Server. The Server Options section of the window contains
connection information that can be configured. For more
information, please see the section, Starting the PC File Server
for the SAS/ACCESS® 9.1 for PC Files: Reference.
NOTE: The GUI that is displayed for the PC FIle Server on the
Windows client will always remain up while the server
is running for now. Having the PC File server run as
a Windows service will be available with SAS 9.2.
Uninstalling the PC File Server
Use Add/Remove Programs to remove the PC File Server.
4) Refer to the SAS Online Documentation for detailed instruction on
configuring the PC File Server for Setting the Service Name or Port
Number, Setting Maximum Connections and Setting Data Encryption.
