Problem Note 14471: "Run-time error '53'" when viewing our .pdf files from the SAS Setup CD or the SAS Software Navigator CD using Adobe Reader 7.0.0

DetailsHotfixAboutRate It
When you select our .pdf files (for example, SAS System Requirements)
from the autorun screen of the SAS Software Navigator or the SAS Setup
CDs and use Adobe Reader 7.0.0, the following error message might
appear:

   SAS Institute Inc.
   Run-time error '53'
   File not found

However, if you use Windows Explorer and view the .pdf files from the
doc/0009 directory or from our web site, those .pdf files open.

Here are two workarounds:

   * Change the Open With in Windows Explorer, by performing the
     following:

      a. Open Windows Explorer
      b. From the menu click on Tools>Folder Options> and then select
         the File Type Tab.
      c. Under the Registered file types, locate the pdf extension and
         click on the Advanced button.
      d. Under Actions, highlight open, and on the right side select the
         Edit button.
      e. Under Application used to perform this action, replace the
command used to start your Adobe Reader application. The
default for the Adobe Reader 7.0 is as follows:

            C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe

      f. Once you make your changes click on OK, OK and Apply.

   * Change this through the SAS Software Navigator by selecting the
     Software Index task:

      a. Insert the SAS Software Navigator CD in your CD-ROM drive.
      b. When autorun comes up, select Install and Configure SAS
         Software as your task.
      c. Select Software Index as the type of deployment you want to
         perform.
      d. Provide the path to your SAS Installation Data file and click
         Next.
      e. Verify the SAS Installation Data and click Next.
      f. On the Software Index window click on Edit>Properties
      g. Under PDF Viewer uncheck the System Default checkbox and enter
the path to your reader. The default value for the Adobe
         Reader 7.0 is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat
         7.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe
