Usage Note 11174: Specifying SAS System option UTILLOC=WORK in SAS 9
UTILLOC specifies the location of a dataset for utility files that are
created by applications which have been THREAD enabled. They are
comparable to SAS files of type UTILITY, but they are not members the
WORK library. Instead, each UTILLOC utility file is either a separate
temporary MVS data set or an HFS file, depending upon how UTILLOC was
specified.
In SAS 9 if SAS System Option UTILLOC is not coded, the
default will be UTILLOC=WORK.
When you code UTILLOC=WORK SAS System option in SAS 9.0 it has the
same effect as specifying 'ALLOC UNIT(dev) BLOCK(4096) SPACE(256,2560)'
where 'dev' is the esoteric device to which the WORK library is
allocated.
When you code UTILLOC=WORK SAS System option at V9 releases subsequent
to SAS 9.0, the default value of the UTILLOC option specifies an amount
of space that is generally equivalent to the amount of space available
for the WORK library. This default is adequate for most applications.
If the WORK library resides in a direct access bound library, each
utility file can grow as large as the entire work library allocation for
a single volume. Applications requiring large utility files that will
need to span volumes for threaded procedures, will require an explicit
UTILLOC specification. If the WORK library resides in a HFS directory,
the UTILLOC utility files will reside in the same location.
If UTILLOC=WORK and the work library is allocated to span multiple
volumes, the maximum for each utility file will only be one volume.
For further information and examples on how to allocate the SAS System
Option UTILLOC, please refer to the SAS Companion for z/OS.
