Opening a Data Source

Overview of Data Sources

You can open and view three types of data sources:
information map icon information map
a collection of metadata that provides a business-relevant view of physical data.
data exploration icon data exploration
a document that contains stored views for a SAS Information Map.
cube icon OLAP cube
a physical data source that is organized and structured in a hierarchical, multidimensional arrangement. SAS OLAP cubes are accessed through SAS application servers.

Open an Information Map

To open an information map:
  1. Select Filethen selectOpen from the main menu bar.
  2. From the Files of Type drop-down list, select Information Map.
  3. Locate the information map that you want to open by navigating the metadata tree:
    • To open a folder, click the name of the folder.
    • To go to the parent of the current folder, click Up one level.
    • To go to an ancestor of the current folder, select the folder from the Location drop-down list.
  4. Click the information map that you want to open. The information map that you selected is displayed on the main SAS Web OLAP Viewer page.

Open a Data Exploration

To open a Data Exploration:
  1. Select Filethen selectOpen from the main menu bar.
  2. From the Files of Type drop-down list, select Data Exploration.
  3. Locate the data exploration that you want to open by navigating the metadata tree:
    • To open a folder, click the name of the folder.
    • To go to the parent of the current folder, click Up one level.
    • To go to an ancestor of the current folder, select the folder from the Location drop-down list.
  4. Click the data exploration that you want to open. The default bookmark for the selected data exploration is displayed on the main SAS Web OLAP Viewer page.
Note: You can also open a data exploration that you have viewed recently by selecting it from the File menu.

Open an OLAP Cube

To open an OLAP Cube:
  1. Select Filethen selectOpen from the main menu bar.
  2. From the Files of Type drop-down list, select Cube.
  3. Locate the OLAP cube that you want to open by browsing the SAS application servers:
    • To browse the cubes on a server, click the name of the server.
    • To return to the list of servers, click Up one level, or select OLAP Servers from the Location drop-down list.
    Note: If the list of servers is empty, or if you receive an error message when you try to view a cube, contact your system administrator.
  4. Click the OLAP cube that you want to open. An information map is generated for the cube, and it is displayed on the main SAS Web OLAP Viewer page.
