Definition of Special Missing Values

A special missing value is a type of numeric missing value that enables you to represent different categories of missing data by using the letters A-Z or an underscore. SAS accepts either uppercase or lowercase letters. Values are displayed and written as uppercase.

Specify the Special Missing Value Option

You can specify how you want special missing values to be displayed in a SAS data set. With SAS Universal Viewer open, select Toolsthen selectOptions. In the Options window, select SAS Data Sets.

Specify how you want special missing values to be displayed and click OK.
From the File menu, select Open, and then select an item from the list. In this case, SAS Data Set was selected. Select the data set that you want to open. The data set appears in the Workspace.
The following window shows that the MISSLITE data set is open. The DESC column provides a description of how data is represented. The columns on the right show the results:
