Understanding Role-Based Settings

Because SAS Enterprise Guide and the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office are used by a wide variety of users and groups within an organization, administrators must be able to control the resources and actions that users can access. For example, an organization might want to allow some users to run reports, but not to modify them. The organization might want to prevent SAS Enterprise Guide users from saving files to their local hard drives. Or the organization might want to display only needed SAS Enterprise Guide tasks, project settings, tools, and help, and hide the rest. SAS Enterprise Guide and the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office enable you to control the actions and tasks that are available to users through roles and role-based settings.
A role manages the availability of application features, called capabilities. For SAS Enterprise Guide and the SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office, the capabilities include how files are opened and saved, the options settings that are visible, and which project settings might be modified. Members are assigned to the roles, based on their activities and responsibilities in your organization. SAS Enterprise Guide tasks are also considered to be capabilities, so you can present a variety of views of the resources and actions that are available to users through their role membership.
