Running the Renew SAS Software utility for SAS® 9.4, SAS® 9.3, or SAS® 9.2 installations might result in an error that the process failed and refers you to the setinit.log file. The following message is displayed:
Note: 9.x in the path above is either 9.4, 9.3, or 9.2, depending on which version you renewed. Also, your SAS installation might be in a different folder than the one indicated above.
To determine the cause, click Yes to review the setinit.log file.
There are several possible reasons why the renewal fails.
If the first two lines of the setinit.log file show a previous date and time, then this indicates that the setinit.log file was not updated during the current renewal process.
This is typically a permissions issue, so you need to take these steps:
If the first two lines of the setinit.log file still show a previous date and time, then the setinit.log file could not be updated due to permissions issues. Check for Read-only permissions on the setinit.log, setinit.sss, sid.txt, and core.sas7bcat files. In some cases the entire SASHome folder and subfolders are all set to Read-only. Remove the read-only check mark for SASHome and subfolders. Remove the read-only check mark for these individual files. Also. check to make sure that you are the local admin on the machine.
If the date at the top of the setinit.log file lists the date and time of the current renewal attempt, then scroll down to the first line in the setinit.log file containing the word ERROR. The associated error message should indicate the problem.
Common problems are that the SID file selected is for the wrong operating system or the user does not have appropriate authorization to the SASHELP.CORE.CATALOG.
So, make sure the SID file selected during the renewal is the same site number and operating system that is currently installed. To check this start SAS 9.4(English), SAS 9.3(English), or SAS 9.2(English) to determine the current site number and operating system installed, which is listed in the top of the SAS log window, or in the SAS expiration message.
Make sure all SAS sessions or SAS expiration messages are closed.
Make sure the SASHELP.CORE.CATALOG file is not set to Read-only and your user ID has full permissions for this file and folders. The default location for the SASHELP.CORE.CATALOG file is C:\program files\SASHome\SASFoundation\9.x\core\sashelp\CORE.SAS7BCAT. Or, for 32-bit SAS on a 64-bit operating system the default location is C:\program files\SASHome\x86\SASFoundation\9.x\core\sashelp\CORE.SAS7BCAT. Note: 9.x in the path above is either 9.4, 9.3, or 9.2, depending on which version you renewed.
