Problem Note 35656: SAS® data set associations might be removed after copying and repositioning worksheets in Microsoft Excel
In Microsoft Excel, if you copy a worksheet that is associated with a SAS data set, and you subsequently change the order of the original and the copied worksheets, then the original worksheet might lose its association to the original data set. The following example illustrates the problem.
Open a data set, such as SASHELP.CLASS, into a worksheet and then create a copy of that worksheet, which is named SASHELP.CLASS(2). The copied worksheet SASHELP.CLASS(2) contains a copy of the SASHELP.CLASS data set. SASHELP.CLASS(2) is not associated with the original SASHELP.CLASS data set on the server.
One way to verify which worksheet is associated with the original data set is to open the Refresh Multiple window. In the following display, you can see that there is only one item to refresh and that item is on the SASHELP.CLASS worksheet.
If you move SASHELP.CLASS(2) so that it is the left-most sheet in the workbook (as shown below), then the SASHELP.CLASS data set on the server will be reassigned to the copied worksheet SASHELP.CLASS(2), and removed from the original worksheet SASHELP.CLASS.
If you reopen the Refresh Multiple window, you see that the SASHELP.CLASS(2) worksheet is now associated with the original data.
To circumvent this problem, do not move copied worksheets to the left-most position in the Excel workbook.
