Usage Note 11954: "Error: %1 is not a valid Win32 application" error message appears
during SAS 9.1 installation
When installing SAS 9.1, the following errors might appear:
Error: % is not a valid Win32 application
or
InstallShieldWizard - System Update Error
The following system components could not be updated on your system.
SAS 9.1 Platform cannot be installed until the minimum system
requirements have been met.
SAS Private Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1
The following is a list of possible causes and solutions:
- Viruses on your system, perhaps a win32.sircam
virus. Perform a thorough scan of your hard drive.
- Copied media. Use the original SAS media instead.
- The SAS Software Navigator CD was shared across the network
and there are spaces in the path. If this is the case, make sure
the path is surrounded by quotes.
- Video drivers have also been known to cause this error. Try
obtaining the updated video drivers.
- Check to see if you have both a C:\Program Files directory and a
C:\Program folder. If you do, rename the C:\Program directory to
another name.
- Has your operating system been upgraded previously?
For example: Win98 to WinXP.
- The image on the network that you are installing from is corrupt or
there are network problems.
- Environment variables for TEMP and TMP have spaces in the directory
name and need to be modified to remove the spaces.
Other solutions include the following:
- Put in the SAS Setup CD located in Section 802 in your SAS
Installation Kit.
- When autorun opens, close it.
- Click on Start>Run, type explorer, and click on OK.
- Go to the srw directory on the CD and run setup.exe.
Can you complete this portion of the installation?
If you are still unable to install, try the following:
- Open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Program Files\InstallShield
Installation Information directory and delete the files that are in
this directory.
- Try your SAS installation again.
- Install SAS from the Start>Run command line, point to your SAS
Setup CD, then sas\setup.exe. Your command will look like
this (this example is using D:\ as the CD-ROM drive):
D:\sas\setup.exe. Then select OK.
- Copy setup.exe from the SSN CD to a temporary folder on your hard
drive. Run setup.exe from the temporary folder, if you still
receive the same error, the setup.exe is corrupted on the CD. This
is rare, but possible. If this happens make sure you are working
with the original SAS CD's, not copied CD's.
- Run the following commands from a command prompt:
java -version
It returns the system Java version or an an error message if a
system JRE is not installed.
For example:
C:\>java -version
java version "1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition
(build 1.4.2_05-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_05-b04, mixed mode)
"C:\Program Files\SAS\Shared Files\JRE\1.4.1\bin\java.exe" -version
It returns the version of the Private SAS JRE that is installed.
If either of these commands returns the "%1 not valid Win32"
error, then there is a problem with that JRE. Uninstall the JRE
(system or private) and then re-install the appropriate JRE.
"C:\Program Files\SAS\Shared Files\JRE\1.4.2_09\bin\java.exe" -version
It returns the version of the Private SAS JRE that is installed.
If either of these commands returns the "%1 not valid Win32"
error, then there is a problem with that JRE. Uninstall the JRE
(system or private) and then re-install the appropriate JRE.
- Remove Internet Explorer (IE), reboot your machine and reinstall IE.
Make sure you apply the latest updates after reinstalling IE.
- Go to the Microsoft update site and update your computer, especially
the critical security fixes and any .Net updates.
A few things to remember when you install SAS:
- Log in as the administrator of the machine.
- Make sure all applications are closed, including anti-virus
software; even if it is running in the background.
- Make sure you have the original SAS CDs. If you are working with
copied CDs and you run into problems, always try the original
CDs.
