This class teaches you how to improve the performance of SQL queries, and how to troubleshoot and tune other SAS processes that access relational database tables using SAS/ACCESS interfaces.

• discuss formal benchmarking and tuning of production SQL queries
• recognize correlated subqueries and the alternate techniques that can be used to improve performance
• use SAS options to evaluate query efficiency
• understand conditions that can prevent SQL pass-through for execution in the database
• modify SQL queries to maximize pass-through capabilities.

Before attending this course, you should have at least six months of experience writing SAS programs including PROC SQL code, or have completed the SAS SQL 1: Essentials course and have used PROC SQL in SAS for at least one month. The course builds on concepts presented in both the SAS Programming 1: Essentials and SAS SQL 1: Essentials courses, and is not recommended for beginning SAS software users. Specifically, you should be able to

• write and submit SAS programs, including PROC SQL steps
• read and interpret the SAS log
• diagnose and correct syntax errors
• access and manipulate data in SAS data libraries.

This course addresses SAS/ACCESS, Base SAS software.

This course uses Base SAS and SAS/ACCESS to Oracle software and is appropriate for students who are using SAS 9.
