SAS Drivers for ODBC enable you to access, update, and manipulate SAS data from ODBC-enabled applications, such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Visual Studio, and Delphi. SAS Drivers for ODBC provide read and write access to databases such as IBM DB2 and Oracle via SAS/ACCESS software running on remote SAS servers. Furthermore, SAS views can be defined to join database tables from different vendors, creating a virtual data warehouse for your ODBC-enabled applications.
There are two versions of SAS Drivers for ODBC:
SAS Drivers for ODBC use the TCP/IP protocol to access your data on a local or remote data server on a variety of host platforms. It is not required that the SAS System be installed on the client machine to access remote SAS data (SAS/SHARE server) via SAS Drivers for ODBC. Accessing local SAS data requires Base SAS software to be installed on the client machines. A remote server requires that Base SAS software, plus the licenses for SAS/SHARE and SAS/SHARE*NET products, are installed.
The 32-bit SAS Driver for ODBC also enables access to SAS Scalable Performance Data Server. SAS data sets and SPDS data sets are interchangeable via use of the LIBNAME statement engine option in either SAS or SPDS. The SAS SPD Server product is multi-threaded server software which takes advantage of Symmetric Multiprocessor hardware to speed up access to SAS data. Contact your SAS representative or see the SAS Web site at www.sas.com for more information about the SAS SPD Server product.
The 64-bit SAS Driver for ODBC does not have access to SAS SPD Server at this time, but it will have access in a future release.
