SAS/LAB software uses a catalog named LABPRNT in your SASUSER directory to store the printer definitions that you provide. Each printer definition is stored in a separate SOURCE entry in this catalog. The Printer List window simply provides an interface for manipulating and modifying these catalog entries.
The first time you bring up SAS/LAB software, a small utility file is created for you. This file is used each time you save or print text. Macro variable \&labtext, which you are directed to use for a file name when entering your printer commands, has the name of this utility file as its value. When you select 'Print current text' or 'Print saved text' from a Journal pull-down menu, the following steps take place. First the journal or current text is copied to the utility file. Then the command or commands for printing to the active printer are executed. Since the value of \&labtext is the name of the utility file, the utility file (which contains the contents of the journal or current window) is printed.
