When you select 'Modify' and then 'Delete variables...' from the File pull-down menu on the main window, a selection list of variables in the current data set is brought up. You can delete up to 20 variables at a time, except that at least one variable must remain in the data set.
Note that you must have write access to the data set to be able to delete variables. Variables cannot be deleted from views.
