What's New in SAS Web Report Studio 4.2


New and enhanced features in SAS Web Report Studio include the following:

Improved User Interface

The following enhancements were made to the user interface:
  • The updated user interface provides users with a more traditional desktop-like experience in the browser.
  • You can drag a data source item from the new Data Source pane and drop it on tables and graphs. This new drag-and-drop support is also available in the Assign Data dialog box (for visual elements) and when you are re-sizing graphs.
  • Support for partial Web page refresh has been added.
  • Object menus are available by right-clicking, instead of having a toolbar attached to the top of the object.
  • The Logon screen and Welcome window have been redesigned.
  • The new left-side panel lets you select data and navigate the Table of Contents.
  • A small progress indicator to the right of the View tab is visible until the last element in a report is rendered on a page.
  • The File menu has replaced the Reports menu.
  • Users can open data sources (information maps) directly from the Open dialog box and the File Management window for a quick view of data.
  • In View mode, depending on your assigned role, you might be able to add group breaks, change the data items used in the section query, and delete objects (for example, tables and graphs). You can also interact with invalid objects to make them valid.
  • A calendar is available in view and design mode for prompting, filtering, and report scheduling.
  • Support is available for chart tips, tooltips, and hyperlinks from rendered stored process graph output (previously stored process output was static).

Improved Prompts and Filters

The following enhancements were made for prompts and filters:
  • Prompts can now be cascading and hierarchical for relational data.
  • Prompts can now be dependent on other prompts so that selection lists are dynamic.
  • Search is available in the Filter dialog box for prompts and filters.
  • You can use data source (information map) filters and prompts for multidimensional data sources.
  • Filters and prompts are no longer required to be case-sensitive.
  • The order of prompts can be controlled.
  • There can be multiple filter conditions for a single data item.
  • You can filter numeric category data items by unformatted data values, which exposes new operators.
  • Section filters have been improved. You can save but not apply custom filters and prompt names.
  • Data source (information map) filters that are based on physical columns can display in SAS Web Report Studio.

Enhanced Role-Based Settings

SAS Web Report Studio ships with three predefined roles – Report Viewing, Report Creation, and Advanced. These roles manage the availability of application features, called capabilities. Your role and the capabilities you can access are defined by your system administrator.
If you migrate from a previous release of SAS Web Report Studio and you need additional capabilities for your role, contact your system administrator.

Updated Report Features

The following enhancements were made to reports:
  • A new default report style, Plateau, is available for reports and replaces the former default style, Seaside. New reports use the Plateau style; however, legacy reports use the same report style that they were saved with in SAS Web Report Studio 3.1.
  • There are color differences in the geographic hierarchy in a geographical map for the Seaside, Festival, and Meadow report styles. Formerly, there was a fixed color specification that was independent of the report style that was used. Now each report style, including Plateau, has its own three-color specification.
  • You can link directly to a SAS stored process.
  • There can be hyperlinks in stored process output for graphs.
  • You can link to a specific report section either within the same report or within a section in another report.
  • You can add and review comments in a report, depending on your settings.
  • You can e-mail a link to a report. You can also include parameter values in a URL.
  • You can call a report directly from a URL.
  • There can be data-driven hyperlinks in tables. For graphs, the links display as data.
  • The Save As feature no longer warns you about overwriting a file when it is the same as the source file.
  • You can create a group break that contains analytic results (a stored process or stored processes) and specify that when the results execute, certain stored process parameters are filled in with the appropriate group break value.
  • In View mode, you can repair invalid table and graph elements. For example, a graph typically requires both a measure and a category value. Suppose that your graph is missing a measure. While in View mode, you can drag a measure from the left-side data pane and drop it on the graph to make it valid. In the previous release, you could repair only invalid table or graph elements in design mode.
  • You can now specify time zone preferences. For example, you can specify a time zone for dynamic dates.

Updated Graph Features

The following enhancements were made to graphs:
  • You can add vertical and horizontal reference lines with annotations to charts.
  • You can change colors used collectively in all graphs within a report.
  • Conditional highlighting is also available for geographic maps.
  • You can set a uniform scale for measures across group breaks.
  • You can manually set a scale across group breaks.
  • You can display a percentage for pie charts. You can also remove the "other" slice.
  • You can have multiple lines, multiple bars, or both on a bar-line chart.
  • Graph borders are turned off by default.
  • A new tile chart is available.

Enhanced Ability to Send Reports via E-mail

The following enhancements were made for distributing reports via e-mail:
  • You can e-mail a URL link to a report.
  • You can e-mail parameterized URLs for reports.

Improved Support for Totals Based on Multidimensional Data Sources

The following improvements were made for supporting totals:
  • You can select parent values or visual totals.
  • You can show the percent of visual totals or of parent values.
  • Secure parent values are now supported.
  • Totals can be positioned at the top, at the bottom, on the left side, or on the right side of a table element.
  • You can total across hierarchies.

Enhanced Multidimensional Data Source Capabilities

The following enhancements were made for multidimensional data source capabilities:
  • You can control the display of missing multidimensional values.
  • You can filter on multidimensional member properties when they are available.
  • You can isolate a multidimensional member.

Improved Printing Capabilities

The following enhancements were made for printing:
  • You can now specify that page X of Y appear for reports that are printed.
  • There are additional page fit options.
  • You can specify that page numbers restart after each section.
  • There is more flexibility for entering margin settings.
  • Bookmarks are available for PDF output.

Enhanced Geographical Map Functionality

If geographical mapping is enabled for a multidimensional data source that is used in a report section, you can insert a map object into the layout of the report. You can now have multiple geographical maps per section, and you can link from a geographical map to another report or to an external URL. In addition, you can also select multiple parameter values to be passed to a linked report.
