Vertical clustering is the practice of deploying multiple
identically configured web application server instances on a single
machine. This can assist with improving performance as long as the
hardware is sufficiently powerful to run additional server instances.
It can also offer some improvement for availability. In the event
that one web application server instance crashes (or an application
on one server instance stops), the applications remain available on
the other web application server instances.
