Professional experience:
Randall Cates has worked with SAS in various forms since the 1980s, mostly in the health care fields in one form or another. He has used his SAS skills at the State of Maine Department of Health, Washington University Department of Psychiatry in St. Louis, and Mallinckrodt Pharmaceutical company in St. Louis before joining SAS as an instructor. His non-SAS work includes a three-year stint in Kenya teaching English and Science as a Peace Corps volunteer. During his 16-year career with SAS Randy has co-developed new versions of many of the SAS foundation courses, as well as newer courses for Enterprise Guide, It Resource Management, Human Capital Management, and one of our latest offerings, SAS Visual Analytics.

Courses I teach include

SAS Programming 1: Essentials
SAS SQL 1: Essentials
SAS Enterprise Guide 1: Querying and Reporting
SAS Enterprise Guide for Experienced SAS Programmers
SAS Visual Analytics: Fast Track

What students are saying:

Very nice and helpful. He makes the 'dry stuff' easier to swallow.
Clear and succinct; he gives solid answers to questions and provides an effective mix of lecture and lab making a lively and interesting approach to class.
Good sense of humor and very knowledgeable ... Randall was great!

What is your favorite training course and why?
Oh, so many choices. I would have to say right now my favorite classes are the new SAS Visual Analytics courses. I really enjoy learning new technologies and the capabilities I see in this new suite of tools are very exciting and great to teach to students. Plus I have the advantage of seeing what new changes happen with each new version of Visual Analytics. It is still in the early stages and each new version has new and exciting things added to it.

Do you have any hobbies, favorite activities, or hidden talents?
Lots of things. I like to work with my hands, and in the past have built a cedar-strip canoe, a wood-fiberglass kayak for my son. Last year I got interested in electronics and built a solar charger for my cell phone.

What is your favorite movie, book, artist, or musician?
I am an unabashed sci-fi reader. My current favorite authors are Jim Butcher and Mercedes Lackey.
