When you use PROC APPEND to append a SAS dataset containing a date field
(date9.) to a DBMS table, the append will appear to work.  However, the
date field (date9.) may not be converted to the DBMS data type
(datetime) in the resulting DBMS table, as expected.

This is actually the proper behavior as stated in the documentation for
PROC APPEND. If a variable has different attributes in the BASE= than it
does in the DATA=, then the attributes of the BASE= prevail.  However,
if the DATA= table is referenced using a SAS/ACCESS libname engine, the
engine should convert the date field to an appropriate data type and/or
issue a message in the log.

Currently, no messages are issued, so the user does not realize the
the date field was not passed correctly.

PROC DBLOAD with the APPEND option works fine in this case and can be
used as a work-around.

This is fixed in SAS V9.0.
