Usage Note 1571: Access to PCFF does not read an Excel97 file in correctly when saved as
Excel 97 & 5.0
When creating an Excel spreadsheet that contains over 16,384 rows and
saving it as a Microsoft Excel 97 & 5.0/95 Workbook and then using
either PROC IMPORT DBMS=EXCEL97 or the Import Wizard and select Excel 97
Spreadsheet, it does not read in this file as an Excel 97 format, but as
an Excel 5.0 format (it only reads in 16,384 rows, which is the Excel
5.0 default - it doesn't read in the rows beyond 16,384). There is no
message in the SAS log, so the user doesn't realize that their data was
truncated.
The default format for Excel 97 is 65,536 rows. When you save the Excel
spreadsheet as Microsoft Excel 97 & 5.0/95 Workbook all of these rows
(65,536) are accessible and displayed.
This is fixed in SAS V8.1.
