SAS Data Integration Studio

SAS Data Integration Studio was formerly known as SAS ETL Studio.

Peaceful Coexistence of Multiple Versions

Multiple versions of Data Integration Studio can be installed on the same computer. For more information about known coexistence issues, see the peaceful coexistence topic.

Both SAS 8.2 and SAS 9 SAS/Warehouse Administrators can be installed on the same computer. Caution should be taken that the correct invocation of SAS is used in SAS/Warehouse Administrator Software jobs.

In Data Integration Studio 4.21 and later, you can import existing SAS programs. For more information, see: SAS Data Integration Studio: User's Guide.

Converting from SAS/Warehouse Administrator to SAS Data Integration Studio

The following sections briefly explain the suggested methodology for converting from SAS/Warehouse Administrator to the follow-on product, SAS Data Integration Studio. (Before Release 3.3, SAS Data Integration Studio was named SAS ETL Studio.)

Why Convert?

SAS Data Integration Studio is bundled into SAS Enterprise Data Integration Server and SAS Data Integration Server. While SAS/Warehouse Administrator is still fully supported in SAS 9, many customers will want the benefit of centralized metadata. In addition, SAS Data Integration Studio is easier to use and has more features than SAS/Warehouse Administrator. The following features are new in SAS Data Integration Studio:

Metadata Must Be Converted

SAS/Warehouse Administrator uses metadata to store information about the systems, processes, and data that describe the environment used to create and maintain a data warehouse. The same kinds of metadata are used in SAS Data Integration Studio but in a much more sophisticated manner. Therefore, your existing SAS/Warehouse Administrator metadata must go through a conversion methodology that is described later in this topic.

Assessing Conversion Efforts

The conversion efforts will depend on the size and complexity of the customer's SAS/Warehouse Administrator implementation. SAS strongly recommends that customers use SAS consulting services to help assess the effort required to convert an environment from SAS/Warehouse Administrator to SAS Data Integration Studio.

Conversion Methodology

The conversion methodology is comprised of documentation and a plug-in tool that are implemented by a SAS consultant. The conversion documentation explains how the metadata is to be described in the new distributed client/server environment. The conversion tool is a plug-in to SAS Data Integration Studio. The plug-in tool can be implemented only by a SAS consultant and is not shipped with the software.

The plug-in tool converts data and process metadata. This includes warehouse data objects (tables, columns), their associated containers (groups, libraries, and schemas), and process metadata objects (jobs, transformations, process flow). Other types of metadata must be rebuilt to correspond to the new environment. The metadata that must be rebuilt includes servers, logins, exploitation of the new security features available in SAS 9, and other environment information needed to develop and run warehouse processes.

OLAP (online analytical processing) is another area that has changed significantly in SAS 9. The OLAP methodology has been enhanced to include a dedicated OLAP server with automatic tuning capabilities. The migration methodology for OLAP involves understanding the new environment and creating new OLAP structures using either Data Integration Studio or OLAP Cube Studio. No automatic conversion tool is currently available to handle OLAP structures.

The following describes the steps involved in the conversion methodology:

Steps You Can Take Now

Consider the following concepts when you deploy new SAS 8 or SAS 9 SAS/Warehouse Administrator jobs that you intend to convert to SAS Data Integration Studio. Using these tips will facilitate your future conversion.

Summary

In a best practice conversion, the SAS consultant uses a conversion plug-in tool and its associated documentation to convert metadata from SAS/Warehouse Administrator to metadata for SAS Data Integration Studio. Then the consultant or the customer deploys the converted jobs in the new environment. The consultant or the customer can customize the jobs by creating new transformations with the Transformation Generator or with Java. Migrating SAS data files to SAS 9 format might also be necessary.
