Operating Environments Supported in SAS®9

For exact specifications, see the System Requirements for your operating environment, available from the Install Center.

The table below is for SAS Foundation products, which include "classic" SAS products like Base SAS, SAS/CONNECT, SAS/GRAPH, and so forth. The table might not be correct for some newer Business Intelligence products that have been released on the most popular operating environments first. Check with your SAS sales representative if you are uncertain.

Operating Environment SAS Bit Specification
AIX 64-bit1
HP-UX for PA-RISC architecture 64-bit
HP-UX for the Itanium processor family architecture 64-bit
Linux for 32-bit Intel architecture 32-bit
Linux for Itanium-based systems
(not supported for SAS 9.2)
64-bit
Linux for x642 64-bit
OpenVMS Alpha
(not supported for SAS 9.2)
64-bit
OpenVMS for HP Integrity servers 64-bit
Solaris for SPARC 64-bit
Solaris for x64 64-bit
Tru64 UNIX
(not supported for SAS 9.2)
64-bit
Windows for 64-bit Itanium-based systems 64-bit
Windows for x643 64-bit
Windows for 32-bit systems 32-bit
z/OS (OS/390) 32-bit

1 Under AIX, SAS®9 can run on a 32-bit or 64-bit kernel. See the System Requirements. The processing and the SAS data files you create are 64-bit, regardless of whether the kernel is 32-bit or 64-bit.

2 Under Linux for x64, you can run 32-bit SAS®9. See the System Requirements. The processing and the SAS data files you create are 32-bit.

3 Under Windows for x64, you can run 32-bit SAS®9. See the System Requirements. The processing and the SAS data files you create are 32-bit.

64-Bit Concerns

The bit specification in the above table refers to the SAS software. In general, 32-bit software applications can run on 64-bit computer architecture.

SAS provides much cross-release compatibility for customers who upgrade to 64-bit SAS and want to continue using SAS files created under the 32-bit release. If these issues concern you, first determine whether they apply to you: See Are My Files Foreign in SAS®9? for the circumstances where an existing file is foreign in SAS®9 (or run the compatibility calculator). Then see Upgrading from a 32-Bit to a 64-Bit Operating Environments for a few issues associated with upgrading your platform and your SAS software to 64-bit.
