Upgrading from a 32-Bit to a 64-Bit Operating Environment

This topic examines issues reported by users during a 64-bit upgrade. Even if you aren't upgrading to 64-bit computer architecture, you might still be subject to a hardware or operating environment upgrade. Migration Issues

Here are some issues associated with upgrading to a 64-bit environment.

• Data that you created with 32-bit SAS are considered foreign files in 64-bit SAS and are subject to a few compatibility constraints. For example, SAS®9 supports input and output processing on 32-bit data sets created in Version 8. However, you will want to migrate 32-bit data sets to SAS®9 format if you need update processing (e.g., calculating a new variable or running PROC APPEND).

• If you want to migrate a SAS data library so that its members are native in your 64-bit SAS®9 session, use the PROC MIGRATE Calculator to find your instructions.
  
  
• You'll need an operating environment expert for debugging and performance tuning (see the topic about tuning.)
  
  
• In 64-bit SAS, you can create a data set with greater than 2³¹-1 (about 2 billion) observations. A data set with more than 2 billion observations is unusable by the BASE engine in 32-bit SAS.
