Migration

Execution: Install SAS

In this phase of your site's migration, you install and configure the target SAS software. The SAS 9 installation process is more seamless than in Release 8.2:

All documentation and CDs are organized in a notebook binder called the Installation Kit, customized worldwide.
The SAS Installation Data improves on the old SETINIT.
The SAS Software Navigator guides you through installing and connecting all of your SAS products and solutions.
Windows sites can choose to run a Quiet Mode installation, where an administrator provides all of the responses that individual users would normally supply to an install wizard.

Step 1: Set up the target operating environment: Create the computer operating environment that will run SAS.
Step 2: Run the source software in the target environment: Verify that the target operating environment is appropriately configured by running the "old" SAS software. This step is optional.
Step 3: Install SAS 9 and run SAS IQ: Run the SAS installations for the required products. Perform preliminary validation.
Step 4: Customize the installation: Customize for operating environment dependencies, third-party software, SAS configuration settings, and autoexec files.
Step 5: Run SAS OQ: Validate the behavior of SAS procedures, features, and functions for Base SAS and many other SAS products.

Best practices

Before you start the installation,

Review the Package Guide. This cover letter is found at the beginning of each Installation Kit and also loose in the package. The Package Guide lists the contents of the package and the steps necessary to install all of the components included in the package.
Read the Alert Notes document, the System Requirements document and, if it exists, the Pre-Production Products and Features List. These three documents are shipped with the Installation Kit (either in hard copy or on a CD) and are also available at the Install Center.
Within your organization, align any specialists who run third-party software installations, who grant operating environment privileges, or who otherwise must be involved, such as the security officer, the system administrator, on-site SAS support personnel, database administrators, end users, and so forth. For example, some SAS installations attempt to perform upgrades to operating environment files, so you must have access to those files.
Have contact information and your site number handy in case you need help from SAS Technical Support.
Close all programs, including virus-scanning software.
