After you have created a course (if you are an instructor) or registered for a course (if you are a student) that uses
SAS® OnDemand for Academics: Enterprise MinerTM, you must verify that you have the appropriate Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed or install the appropriate JRE.
Note: Consider printing these instructions before you begin as some of the steps might require you to navigate away from this site to other Web sites.
Step One: Verify whether a JRE (and Java Web Start) is installed
To verify whether you have a JRE installed, try the following:
- Open a Command Prompt window. Select Start --> Run. Then, type
CMD in the Run window.
- On the Command Prompt window, type
start javaws or javaws -viewer
- If either of the above commands opens one of the following windows, then you have a JRE (and Java Web Start) installed.
JRE 1.4.2_xx:

JRE 1.6:

- If you have a JRE installed, then continue to Step Two. If neither of the above commands worked, then you likely do not have a JRE installed. Continue to Step Three.
Step Two: Ensure that you are using the appropriate Java Runtime Environment
SAS® OnDemand for Academics: Enterprise MinerTM requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.4.2_15. To check which version you are using, choose the appropriate path based on the outcome of Step One:
Users with JRE 1.4.2_xx
- From a Command Prompt window, start Java Web Start:
Type javaws -viewer and then press ENTER.
If this does not start Java Web Start, then do the following:
Type start javaws and then press ENTER.
- If the Java Cache Viewer window appears, close it so that you can see the Java Control Panel window. The Java Control Panel window often opens behind the Java Cache Viewer window.
- From the Java Control Panel window, select File --> Preferences.
- Select the Java tab.
- From the Java Runtime Environments area, review the JREs that are currently available.
- In the Enabled column, check only one JRE (uncheck any other JREs that are checked). Make sure that the checked JRE is JRE 1.4.2_15.
If JRE 1.4.2_15 is not available, then continue to Step Three. Otherwise, continue to Step Four.
Users with JRE 1.6
- From a Command Prompt window, start Java Web Start. Type
start javaws -viewer and then press ENTER.
- If the Java Cache Viewer window appears, close it so that you can see the Java Control Panel window. The Java Control Panel window often opens behind the Java Cache Viewer window.
- From the Java Control Panel window, select the Java tab.
- From the Java Application Runtime Settings area (the bottom half of the window), click View (the second "View" button on the window).
- In the Enabled column, check only one JRE (uncheck any other JREs that are checked). Make sure that the checked JRE is JRE 1.4.2_15.
If JRE 1.4.2_15 is not available, then continue to Step Three. Otherwise, continue to Step Four.
Step Three: Install the appropriate Java Runtime Environment and Java Web Start
Installing the appropriate JRE will also install Java Web Start on your system.
- Access the Sun Microsystems Web site for Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2_15.
- Under the section titled J2RE 1.4.2_15, select Download J2RE.
- From the Platform drop down, select Windows.
- Check the box to agree to the license agreement and then click Continue.
- Locate the Required Files section.
- Under Windows Offline Installation, click the j2re-1_4_2_15-windows-i586-p.exe link. When prompted, click Run to
begin the download and installation process.
Note: Avoid clicking the orange box labeled as "Download Selected with Sun Download Manager". The Sun Download Manager is not needed.
- (Optional) If you had to complete Step Two above, return to that step after installing JRE 1.4.2_15 to ensure that only JRE 1.4.2_15 is selected.
Step Four: Add the SAS Certificate to your System
After you have installed a JRE and/or ensured that you are using the right JRE, it is time to install the SAS Certificate that will enable you to use SAS® OnDemand for Academics: Enterprise MinerTM. See SAS® OnDemand for Academics: Enterprise MinerTM Certificate Configuration for instructions.
