z/OS is a highly secure, scalable, high-performance enterprise operating system on which to build and deploy Internet and Java-enabled applications, providing a comprehensive and diverse application execution environment. z/OS runs on IBM's latest mainframe servers: the z800, z890, z900, z990, z9, z10(zNext), z196(zEnterprise), G6, G5, and Multiprise 3000 servers.
z/OS is a 64-bit operating system for mainframe computers. It is the successor to OS/390, which in turn followed a string of MVS versions. The manner in which CPU information is obtained from the new IBM zSeries processors does not adversely affect successful application of the SAS SETINIT.
SAS has no dependencies on the real storage addresses and is supported on the new IBM zSeries processors and with the z/OS and z/OS.e operating systems.
Customers running z990 (or later) hardware that wish to enable the ECMB (Extended Channel Measurement Block) may do so without any changes to SAS. SAS does not access these control blocks, and is unaffected by the change from CMB to ECMB.
Software requirements (z/OS, z/OS.e) can be found in the Install Center link below. Select the SAS release, then the System Requirements link to find the minimum software requirements for your operating system.
See http://support.sas.com/resources/sysreq/hosts/zos/ for a summarized IBM/SAS Support Matrix.
This link identifies existing levels of support for both current
and non-current releases of SAS software:

There are currently no major compatibility issues except for those notes referenced below. However, SAS recommends upgrading to the latest release and applying the most current hot fix bundle or service pack for that release.
The Install Center lists the latest releases available:

For issues related to the new zSeries machines, refer to SAS Notes 04291 and 04358 .
When running z/OS 1.2 and later using the new TCP/IP resolver directives, refer to SAS Notes 09095 and 09099 . SAS/CONNECT spawner users or SAS/Integration Technology users, please review SAS Note 09360 .
For issues related to SAS Spawners (IOM and CONNECT) under z/OS 1.7 refer to SAS Note 16738 .
For information regarding SAS® IT Resource Management and SAS® IT Charge Management, refer to SAS notes 08131 and 08227 , respectively.
Under z/OS V1R7 and V1R8 a sequential library on DASD that is backed up via HBACKDS may potentially lose updates or be truncated. For more information, please see SAS Note 19315 .
Important Note: Beginning with z/OS V1R9, it was optional to move the PCCA control block above the 16M line in memory. SAS 8.2 and SAS 6.09E will abend with an 0C4 in this scenario. Many customers have reported these 0C4 abends only after upgrading to z/OS V1R12 - it appears that this control block is above the line by default in z/OS V1R12. Refer to the following SAS notes to correct this problem:
Version 6.09E : http://support.sas.com/techsup/unotes/V6/H/H038.html
Version 8.2: 19438
Also for z/OS V1R8 and V1R9, please see SAS Note 15525
SAS customers running 6.09E, please call technical support for an available zap.
For z/OS V1R10, please see SAS Note 35332
For a z10 machine, please apply the appropriate IBM APARs as described in SAS Notes 31484 and 33749
SAS customers with SAS files in zFS file systems, please contact IBM to open a PMR and request IBM APAR OA25725.
For z/OS V1R11, please see SAS Note 38132 .
For z/OS V1R12, please see SAS Notes 41261 and 42473.
IMPORTANT: z/OS V1R12 sites that also use Computer Associates' TSO/MON® must also see SAS Note 44042 .
For SAS compatibility with OS/390, refer to SAS Note 01705 .
