Problem Note 7766: When opening SAS System Help 8.2, browser opens and "The page cannot be
found" error message appears
When you try to open SAS System Help, a browser invokes, and the
following error message appears:
The page cannot be found.
A URL similiar to the following appears in the Address field:
http://<machinename>:<portid>/help/common.hlp/mainpage.htm?
Document=../base.help/sashelp_main.htm
Other error messages that might appear are as follows:
The SAS Web Server has encountered an error.
HTTP/1.1 404 Not found.
If you are on Windows XP with Service Pack 2, a slightly different error
might appear:
Error
The requested URL could not be retrieved
While trying to retrieve the URL:
http://[your machine name]:[portnumber]/help/common.hlp/mainpage.htm?
Document=../base/sashelp_main.htm
The following error was encountered:
Connection Failed
The system returned:
(110) Connection timed out
The remote host or network may be down. Please try the request again.
For Windows XP, a "Windows Security Alert" window might also appear
regarding the Windows Firewall protection. You can close this window by
clicking the X. This alert should not appear once the hotfix has been
applied correctly.
The behavior and the error message occur because the HTML Help
hhctrl.ocx has been updated to version 5.2.xxx. The currently accepted
version of the hhctrl.ocx in SAS System Help is 4.74.xxx. Because SAS
System Help does not accept version 5.2.xxx as valid, it defaults to the
browser and the SAS System Help never opens.
Microsoft recently released this new version of HTML Help in its
products. One of the following could update the HTML Help version:
* Windows XP Service Pack 1
* Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
* Windows Security Update Q323255
A Technical Support hotfix for Release 8.2 TSLEVEL TS2M0 for this issue
is available at:
http://ftp.sas.com/techsup/download/hotfix/82_win_sbcs.html#007766
For customers running SAS with Asian Language Support (DBCS), this
hotfix should be downloaded from:
http://ftp.sas.com/techsup/download/hotfix/82_win_dbcs.html#007766
Note: If Help is still broken after you apply the hotfix, check to see
if you have a DBCS folder in the sasroot path. A typical default sasroot
is as follows:
c:\program files\sas institute\sas\v8
If Asian Language Support is installed, check for a DBCS folder in the
sasroot path as follows:
c:\program files\sas institute\sas\v8\dbcs
If so, then use the hotfix for Asian Language Support (DBCS).
For more information about applying hot fixes, see SAS Note
#011134 .
For more information about applying DBCS hot fixes, see SAS Note
#011135 .
