Problem Note 5747: PROC MEANS/SUMMARY may produce incorrect output with numeric CLASS
variables
Beginning in Version 8 of the SAS System, PROC MEANS/SUMMARY does not
automatically apply the BEST12 format to numeric CLASS variables if they
are unformatted. In prior releases the BEST12 format was applied to all
unformatted numeric CLASS variables. This introduced two problems. First,
if the values of the CLASS variable differ past the precision of BEST12,
you receive multiple observations that appear to be the same. Second, if
ORDER=FORMATTED is specified, the BEST12 format is applied and the CLASS
variable groups all observations which appear the same through twelve
decimal places. This reduces the number of output observations. Changing
the ordering option should never affect the number of output
observations.
