Installing SAS client applications, such as SAS® Enterprise Guide®, requires a valid SAS license for the order that you are installing. The operating system value in the SAS installation data file (SID file) does not have to match the operating system of the machine that SAS is installed on as long as the SAS client application is part of the order that you are using. The SAS license file that you point to during the installation of SAS® Foundation (Base® SAS) must be valid in order for the installation to proceed.
Error messages occur if you accidentally select SAS Foundation. For example:
An example of the behavior that you might see when using a Windows XP 32-bit machine with a multiple-site order is that the default SAS SID file might be for an x64 server instead of the workstation. The first SID file in the sid_files depot directory (in the form of sas93_order#_TS site number_host.txt) is the default selection when the client applications are selected.
For SAS client application installations, the best practice is to accept the default SID file that comes up. When you install just the clients, it does not matter which SID file is used as long as it is a valid license file from the order that you are installing from. The installer does not look at the operating system with the client pieces installed. However, SAS Foundation (Base SAS) is different in that it requires that the SID file match your operating system. A SAS Foundation installation cannot continue without the correct SID file.
The behavior is the same, whether you select Install Additional Software, Install SAS Foundation and related Software, or Install a Planned Deployment - selecting the Client machine, as long as SAS Foundation is not checked.
You can use a quiet installation to specify the SID file that is selected during the installation. First, you use the Record Mode to select the correct SID file. Then use the Record Playback Mode on the other PCs. For more information, see SAS Note 37041: "Tips and techniques for performing a SAS® 9.2 quiet deployment."

CAUTION: Be careful to use the correct SAS installation data file that contains the SAS products that you are planning to install. Using an incorrect file can cause installation failure for SAS add-on products or other errors later when attempting to run SAS. For multi-machine deployments, during the clients step, choose the SAS installation data file for the server machine that is associated with the clients being installed.
