SAS might stop functioning if you try to import Microsoft Excel (.xls) files using the XLS driver on UNIX platforms. The same file imports correctly on a Windows platform. The problem occurs under the following circumstances:

• When you use both the GETNAMES=NO option and the RANGE= option
• When the range imported contains no values in the cells

To circumvent the problem, do one of the following:

• Contact SAS Technical Support to request a hot fix
• Add one dummy value to the range of data in the Excel worksheet and delete it in SAS
• Alter the range to include data or remove the RANGE= value entirely
