SAS Information Map Studio does not enforce user-defined formats that replace missing numeric values (which appear as .) with character values. As a workaround, you can edit the expression for the data item to reference the user-defined format and leave the Format option set to Default. For example, to apply a format named NEWMISS that replaces missing values (.) for the Age measure with "n/a", you might edit the expression for the Age data item like this:
