Problem Note 4439: BY variable position may cause errors
In Release 8.1 TSLEVEL 1M0 of the SAS System, customers may receive
the following message after a host sort has been used:
ERROR: BY VARIABLES ARE NOT PROPERLY SORTED ON DATA SET
if the input data set Program Data Vector (PDV) is arranged such that
any BY variable is positioned more than 4092 bytes from the beginning.
A circumvention is to use the SAS sort utility by specifying OPTIONS
SORTPGM=SAS.
The problem is fixed in SAS System 9.
