Installation Note 39520: SAS Download Manager stops responding and "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space" message appears in bootstrap.log
When you are downloading a depot while using the SAS Download Manager, the SAS Download Manager stops responding and this error message appears in bootstrap.log:
2010/04/22 11:19:06:836 EDT [DEBUG] HttpConnection -
Releasing connection back to connection manager.
Exception in thread
"AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
at java.lang.String.(Unknown Source)
at java.io.BufferedReader.readLine(Unknown Source)
at java.io.BufferedReader.readLine(Unknown Source)
Note: The bootstrap.log file is located in:
XP
c:\Documents and Settings\userid\Local Settings\Application Data\SAS\SASDeploymentWizard\9.2
Vista, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 7, Windows 2008 Server
c:\users\userid\appdata\local\sas\sasdeploymentwizard\9.2
You might not be able to find it if you have certain settings in Windows Explorer.
If you are on Vista, Windows 2003 Server, Windows 7, or Windows 2008 Server, you might have to select
- Organize>Folder and Search Options>View.
- Select "Show hidden files and folders".
- Unselect "Hide extensions..." and "Hide protected...".
This behavior and message appears because the SAS Download Manager is loading into memory everything about the order you are downloading and the target location is exceeding the available heap size of the SAS Download Manager.
Workaround
This simple fix will double the amount of heap that Java is allowed to use, allowing downloading to proceed.
- Navigate to Go to the product directory where the SAS Download Manager is installed. The default location is C:\Program Files (x86)\SAS\SASDownloadManager\1.x.
- In a text editor, open the esdclient.ini file.
- Inside of this text file, look for a section that looks something like this for each host on which the SAS Download Manager is supported:
[win]
launchercmd=jre/bin/java.exe
launcherargs=-Xmx512M -jar setup.jar -esd
For the operating system on which you have installed the SAS Download Manager, increase the
-Xmx512M
value to something greater; for example, -Xmx1024M. Save the file and proceed with the download.
