Usage Note 37314: How to determine which Windows operating system you are currently running
There are many versions of the Windows operating system. To successfully install the SAS® software, the order that you are installing must be compatible with your operating system name and operating system type. If you have an x64-based PC, you can install an x64 or a 32-bit SAS order. If you have an x86-based pc, you can install only a 32-bit SAS order. To determine whether the SAS software is supported on your Windows operating system, you first need to determine what you are actually running. Verify this by looking at your System Information dialog box.
The command msinfo32.exe works on all of the Windows operating systems to display the operating system information. However, on some machines, this might have been disabled by the system administrator.
- Select Start ► Run, type msinfo32.exe, and press the ENTER key.
On Windows 7, click Start, type msinfo32.exe in the Search programs and file command box, and press the ENTER key.
Note: Here are a few other options to get to the System Information:
- Search for System Information and, when found, double-click it.
- On Windows 2012, go to Server Manager, click Tools, and select System Information.
- When the System Information dialog box appears, look in the right pane for both the OS Name and the System Type.
- If the System Type is x64-based PC, you have a 64-bit operating system.
- If the System Type is x86-based PC, you have a 32-bit operating system.
- If the System Type is Itanium-based System, you have a true 64-bit operating system.

Note: If you need to install both an x64 order and a 32-bit order on the same machine, make sure you install the x64 order first.
