In SAS^® 9.2, cascading prompts can be created for a SAS^® Stored Process. A cascading prompt is a dynamic prompt that is dependent on another prompt.

A dynamic prompt is a prompt in which the set of possible values the user can select from is queried live at runtime from SAS (or any data source with which SAS converses). A cascading prompt is a dynamic prompt which subsets the values it displays based on the value of a previously answered prompt. Cascading prompts allow you to present large numbers of choices to users with a logical navigation progression. An example of a cascade would be:

As an example, you can create a cascading prompt using the following approach:

1. See the section at the bottom of this Usage Note about "How to make the PRDSALE table available as a Data source".
2. Using SAS^® Management Console, select the Folders tab.
3. Then, under SAS Folders, select the folder where you want to create a new SAS Stored Process.
4. Create a SAS Stored Process called cascade_prompt_test.
5. Right–click the SAS Stored Process folder. Then, select New Stored Process to invoke the New Stored Process wizard.
6. In the Parameters window, click New Prompt.
7. In the New Prompt window, specify the following:

      Name:  prodtype
   
      Displayed Text: Product Type
   

8. Click the Prompt Type and Values tab. Then, specify the following:

       Method for populating prompt: 
       User selects values from a dynamic list
   

9. For Data Source, click Browse. Then, browse and select the following:

        /Products/SAS Intelligence Platform/Samples/PRDSALE
   

10. For Column, select Product Type.
11. Click OK to save.
12. In the Parameters window, click New Prompt.
13. In the New Prompt window, specify the following:

       Name:  product
    
       Displayed Text: Product 
    

14. Click the Prompt Type and Values tab. Then, specify the following:

        Method for populating prompt: 
        User selects values from a dynamic list
    

15. For Data souce, click Browse. Then, select the following:

         /Products/SAS Intelligence Platform/Samples/PRDSALE
    

16. For Column, select Product.
17. Click the Dependencies tab.
18. Click Add to add a dependency.

    For the dependent Prompt value, select Product Type.

    For Dependency, select the default dependency:

        Column: Product Type
    
        Operator: Contains
    
        Value of Prompt: Product Type
    

19. Click OK to save.
20. In the Parameters window, click Test Prompts to invoke the Test the Prompts window.
21. In the Test the Prompts window, for Product Type, select FURNITURE.

    Note the values that are available for Product. The available values should be:

            BED
            SOFA
    

22. In the Test the Prompts window, for Product Type, select OFFICE.

    Note the values that are available for Product. The available values should be:

            CHAIR
            DESK
            TABLE
    

23. Click Finish at the bottom of the New Stored Process window to save the new stored process.

How to make the PRDSALE table available as a Data source

1. Execute the following SAS code to copy the sashelp.prdsale data set to the STP Samples library.

     
       libname out "!sasroot\inttech\sample";
   
       data out.prdsale;
         set sashelp.prdsale;
       run;
    

2. Using SAS^® Management Console, follow these steps:
   1. Under "Data Library Manager", select:
      Libraries ► STP Samples
   2. Right–click on STP Samples and Select Register Tables
   3. The Wizard will prompt you for information. On the Register Tables window, select the table PRDSALE
   4. For Location select: /Products/SAS Intelligence Platform/Samples
   5. Click Next to continue and then click Finish to Register the table.
