Problem Note 35933: Microsoft STORPORT Driver can help on Windows Server 2003, "ERROR: An I/O error has occurred on file libname.setname.DATA"
On Windows Servers, the following error might appear in the SAS log:
ERROR: An I/O error has occurred on file libname.setname.DATA
If you have a high-performance storage solution, such as a SAN, this error likely results from the Windows storage solution flooding your Windows system file cache. Alternately, the error could be caused by low disk space or by a problem in your storage system.
Note: If you do not have a high-performance storage system then this SAS Note does not apply.
When the error occurs due to the combination of heavy SAS I/O and the high-performance storage solution, the solution is to apply the Microsoft Storport storage driver for host bus adapter (HBA) storage devices.
Please work with your storage device vendor to obtain the correct storport driver.
Details regarding the Storport Driver are available on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/268154.
Some points to consider as you work to resolve this issue:
- This error is different from "ERROR: Undetermined I/O failure." or other I/O errors with similar wording.
- This SAS Note is intended for the server's system administrator.
- You should always back up your server before making configuration changes.
- Before applying the Storport Driver, make sure the problem is not low disk space or a problem disk in your
storage system. See Best
Practices for Configuring your IO Subsystem for SAS 9 Applications.
- For Windows Server 2008 please see SAS Note 39615 "Available memory might approach 0%
on 64-bit Windows Operating Systems when running large SAS programs".

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
High-performance storage solutions can flood the Windows file cache. The fix is to install the Storport Driver from Microsoft msdn.
