Overview

This sample shows you how to create a new dashboard in SAS BI Dashboard and then display it in the SAS^® Information Delivery Portal.

Requirements

• SAS BI Dashboard and SAS Information Delivery Portal are installed.
• You have a user ID that can you can use to log into both applications.
• A workspace server is available to accept requests.

Note: This sample uses zzz TEST as the name of the indicator, the data model, the range, and the dashboard. The zzz prefix ensures that these items always appear at the bottom of any list in SAS BI Dashboard. The content that is created in this example can be removed when it is no longer needed.

Create a New Indicator

1. Log into SAS BI Dashboard and the Manage Indicators page appears.



2. Click New Indicator to display the New Indicator page.
3. In the Name box, type zzz TEST.



4. Next to the Data model box, click New to access the New Data Model page.

5. In the Name box, enter zzz TEST.
6. Next to the Data source box, click Select and select SAS Data Set.
7. In the SAS Data Set Query box, enter the following SQL query:

   select * from sashelp.class

8. Click Submit.

   The query will be processed by the workspace server. After the query completes successfully, a Preview Design section will be added beneath the Query box.

   This page should look like this.

   

   Note: If you receive an error message after clicking on Submit, take note of the error message. The likely causes of problems are typing errors when entering the query, or a SAS Workspace server that is not functioning correctly; contact your SAS Administrator for assistance with this issue.

9. Click OK to return to the New Indicator page.
10. Set the Display option to KPI (if KPI is not already selected).
11. Next to the Range box, click New to access the New Range page.

Define the Range for the Indicator

12. In the Name box, enter zzz TEST.
13. In the Interval box, enter these values, clicking Add Interval after each value is entered: 5, 10, 13, and 15
14. In the Code Interval section, select the following values from the drop-down lists:
    • Below Target
    • Below Target
    • On Target
    • Above Target
    • Above Target

    As you change the Code Interval values, notice the color changes to the right. The defaults are red for below target, yellow for on target, and green for above target. You may change these colors.

    When you are done, the page will look like this:



15. Click OK to return to the New Indicator page.

Define the Gauge for the Indicator

16. Set the Gauge type option to Dynamic Speedometer (if that is not already selected).
17. The Primary value identifies the numeric data column that will be displayed on the gauges of the dashboard. For this sample, the default value is Age, which you will keep. Also accept the default value of <None> as the Secondary value.

This is what the New Indicator page will look like:



18. Click the Display tab.

19. Deselect the Use Default option.
20. Set the Height option to 600.
21. Set the Width option to 800.

The Display tab will look like this:



22. Click OK to return to the Manage Indicators page. You will see the indicator that you just created, zzz TEST. Also notice that the Data Model and Range/Gauge Type are filled in.

    

Create a New Dashboard That Uses the New Indicator

1. On the Manage Indicators page, click the Dashboards tab to display the Manage Dashboards page.



2. Click New Dashboard to open the New Dashboard page.
3. In the Name box, enter zzz TEST.
4. Move zzz TEST from the Available indicators list to the Selected indicators list.

   

5. Click OK to return to the Manage Dashboards page.
   

At this point, SAS BI Dashboard is functioning as designed, and you have created an indicator, which will be displayed in a dashboard. The next step is to make sure that the new dashboard can be displayed in the Portal. You can log off of SAS BI Dashboard before continuing.

Display the "zzz TEST Dashboard" in the Portal

1. Open a new browser session and log into the SAS Information Delivery Portal.
2. Select Options ► Add Page.
3. Enter a name for the page such as BI Dashboard Test.
4. Click Add and then click Done.

   You will be taken back to the portal, and the BI Dashboard Test page will be displayed.

5. Select Options ► Edit Page Content.
6. Click Add Portlets.
7. Change the Portlet type to SAS BI Dashboard.
8. Enter a name for the portlet such as Test Dashboard, and then click Add and then click Done.

   You will be taken back to the Edit Page Content window.

9. Click OK to return to the BI Dashboard Test page.
10. You should see an empty Test Dashboard portlet on the page. From the Dashboard drop-down list, select zzz TEST to display the dashboard that you created earlier.

    This is what the page should look like.



You can use the scroll bar in the portlet to see the other gauges that were generated by SAS BI Dashboard.
