Overview
Access to features in SAS Web Report Studio is controlled by role membership. This SAS note explains how to define a group of users who should have only the most basic view-only access to reports. Access is different depending on the version that you are using. For example, the most basic access in version 3.1 provides more functionality that the most basic access in versions 4.2 and 4.3.
Version 3.1
In version 3.1, by default, the SAS Web Report Studio roles are empty and everyone who can log into the application can view, edit, and create new reports. However, if you explicitly assign any members to any role (other than the WRS Administrator role) then only the explicitly assigned members will have the capabilities that are associated with that role.
In order to create a group of users who can only view reports, you can assign all users except the viewers to at least the WRS Report Consumer role.
Report viewers can export and print reports. They also can temporarily manipulate their view of the data by performing tasks such as filtering, sorting, applying conditional highlighting, and changing graph types (for example, changing a bar chart to a pie chart). However, report viewers cannot create new reports, copy existing reports, or save changes to reports.
For more information about using SAS Web Report Studio roles in version 3.1, see "Using SAS Web Report Studio Roles" in Setting up Users for SAS Web Report Studio.
Versions 4.2 and 4.3
In versions 4.2 and 4.3, users who are not members of a role are limited to the implicit view-only capabilities. Unlike version 3.1, this limitation exists regardless of whether the predefined (or custom) roles have members.
In versions 4.2 and 4.3, users with implicit view-only capabilities cannot export or print reports. They also cannot perform tasks such as filtering, sorting, applying conditional highlighting, or changing graph or table types. Depending on the specific report, they might be able to follow links, enter prompt values, and view detail data.
Tip: To more easily keep track of users who have only implicit capabilities, you can create a new SAS Web Report Studio role with no capabilities selected.
Note: By default, the PUBLIC group is a member of both the Web Report Studio: Report Creation and the Web Report Studio: Report Viewing roles. So, when you are ready to restrict access to specific capabilities, remember to remove PUBLIC (which includes all users in your deployment) from the applicable roles.
