This SAS note describes workarounds to try if you receive errors after invoking SAS 9.2 or an earlier release or if you are unable to open the Enhanced Editor.
For similar errors that occur with SAS® 9.3, see SAS Note 44495: "Errors occur when you use the Enhanced Editor in SAS® 9.3 on the Windows platform."
When you install and invoke SAS 9.2 or an earlier release and then try to open or use the Enhanced Editor or right-click a .sas file that contains code, any of the following error messages might appear. The message(s) would appear in the SAS log as the Enhanced Editor begins to open.
Error: generic critical error. Error: read access violation in task [Enhanced Editor]. Syntax Editor control is not installed. OLE: Object's class is not registered in the registration database. The application necessary to activate the object is unavailable. Would you like to convert it to or activate it as another type of object using convert... Automation error.
Note: You might not be able to use the Enhanced Editor.
If you try to invoke the SAS 9.2 Enhanced Editor, this error message might appear:
Enhanced Editor Unable to load managed editor component. Error: 0x80040154. The editor may not be installed properly.
For information about troubleshooting this issue, see SAS Note 34150 "Error messages might appear when you invoke the SAS® 9.2 Enhanced Editor."
First, open SAS and look at the top of the SAS log window to see the SAS version. This error occurs on Microsoft Windows 7 operating systems if an unsupported version of SAS 9.2 is installed, such as SAS 9.2 (TS1M0), SAS 9.2 (TS2M0), or in some cases SAS 9.2 (TS2M2). SAS 9.2 (TS2M3) support is documented in SAS Note 34569: "SAS® 9.2 support for the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system." If the SAS version is unsupported on Windows 7, then completely uninstall SAS and re-install a supported version of SAS.
Here are workarounds and circumventions for SAS 8, SAS 9.1, and SAS 9.2:
Insert the SAS Shared Components CD in the CD-ROM drive, or point to the Disk901 directory in a SAS Software Depot.
* If you are installing from the SAS® Foundation 9.1.3 DVD, insert the DVD, close all SAS windows, open Windows Explorer, and then run setup.exe from the sassetupsm1dvd\sas\disk701\bundles\eeditor directory.
In the SAS Software Depot, navigate to the appropriate folder for your operating system:
Or, enter the following if regsvr32.exe exists in this folder: c:\windows\system32\regsvr32.exe directory-structure-by-SAS-release
Or, enter the following if regsvr32.exe exists in this folder: c:\windows\system\regsvr32.exe directory-structure-by-SAS-release
Or, enter the following if regsvr32.exe exists in this folder: c:\winnt\system32\regsvr32.exe directory-structure-by-SAS-release
The variable directory-structure-by-SAS-release refers to the directory structure that you actually enter, based on the specific SAS release.
Note: Use double quotation marks around your-directory-structure when spaces exist between words in the directory path:
If you do not have access to the installation CDs or to a SAS Software Depot, you can download the Enhanced Editor installation files from the SAS Customer Support Web site and install it. To perform this installation, follow these steps:
